Five people were killed in a road crash along the Kiziranfumbi-Kabale road in Kikuube District on Wednesday night.
The victims, four men and a woman, died on the spot after a Toyota Drone taxi, registration number UA 535BL, collided head-on with an unidentified tractor at Kisambu Cell.
The Albertine Regional Police spokesperson, SP Hakiza Julius Allan, said the accident occurred at about 8:30pm as the taxi travelled from Kiziranfumbi towards Kabale.
The tractor was travelling in the opposite direction, from Kabale towards Kiziranfumbi, when it collided with the taxi.
Hakiza said the tractor driver fled the scene immediately after the crash.
Kikuube District Police Commander, SP Barugahare Kyoto Abel, visited the scene with a team of police officers.
Police documented the scene, recorded statements from witnesses and secured the taxi pending inspection.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Kikuube Health Centre IV mortuary for postmortem examination.
Police attributed the crash to reckless driving and said efforts were underway to trace the tractor and arrest its driver.
Hakiza urged motorists to avoid reckless driving and overspeeding and cautioned drivers involved in crashes against fleeing from accident scenes.
Police appealed to anyone with information that could help identify the tractor driver to report to the nearest police station.
