Police in Mbarara is investigating circumstances under which a police officer attached to Field Force Unit (FFU) Mbarara City shot dead a UPDF soldier.

It is alleged that PC Charles Opio, NO.50158 on Friday (May 19) at around 1800hrs while at Police/ Prison Cell at the residence of FFU opposite bank of Uganda Mbarara branch shot dead a one L/CPL YEREMIAH PAPE,  UPDF Officer attached Ruhengyere Engineering Brigade Kiruhura district following a misunderstanding between the two.

Police from Mbarara visited and documented the scene of the crime and the suspect was immediately arrested and detained at CPS Mbarara and gun exhibited.

The body of the deceased was taken to Mbarara hospital for postmortem.

SP Bwambale Emmanuel, the DPC CPS Mbarara confirmed this report noting that a case of murder by shooting has been recorded at CPS Mbarara under reference number CRB 662/2023. Bwambale called upon all armed forces to learn how to hold their temper when in possession of firearms.

The police deputy spokesperson Polly Namaye said police have started on inquiries into this stressful incident noting that the suspect will be charged in accordance with laws as soon as investigations are completed.

The Mbarara shooting incident follows more other killings by shooting in Kampala and other areas majority involving armed security officers in police, updf and private guards.
