Leaders from the Acholi region have given government an ultimatum of two to consider reopening of Gulu district which was earlier this day put under total lockdown.
Gilbert Oulanya, the MP Kilak South who also doubles as the Secretary General of the Acholi Parliamentary Group said that Gulu district regional hospital has only two community cases therefore cannot be under a lockdown.
He threatened to protest should the gov’t fail to lift the lockdown within two days.
“We need the government to open Gulu district immediately within one or two days, if not, we are ready to organize our people to sit on the streets even if for two weeks.” Olanya demanded.
He was speaking at Gulu Main Bus park where hundreds of thousand passengers were left helpless after COVID-19 taskforce and security blocked the movement of buses and Taxis from Gulu district to Kampala and other neighbouring districts.
The lockdown follow presidential directive on Monday during his address on corona virus updates when he stayed the lockdown for Eight border districts with high risks of COVID-19 while lockdown of over 30 districts at border points was lifted.
The high risk districts whose lockdown remained include; Rakai, Kyotera, Amuru, Buikwe,Arua, Adjumani, Moyo and Nebbi.
This pissed off public and private transport operators, Passengers since Gulu was not mentioned among the 8 districts still under lockdown.
Speaking to the media, the Gulu District Residential Commissioner Maj Santos Okot Lapollo said that his office has already written a formal letter seeking for clarification from the office of the president regarding the lockdown imposed on Gulu district.
He however urged the public to remain calm and also practice the set guidelines to prevent the possible spread of the corona virus disease.
