The National Council for Higher Education has unanimously allowed Victoria University to teach and graduate it’s students in Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Degree Program.

“I am pleased to inform you that after due to consideration, council at its 76th meeting of 10th July, 2024, under Min. 607/76/2024 accredited the academic programmes indicated for the specified admissible number of students and the stated accreditation period with effect from 10th July, 2024,” read NCHE letter to the university in parts.

According to the letter, the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) approved three academic programmes including Bachelor of Law with 81 admissible number of students per year accredited for 9 years, Diploma in Events and Hospitality Management with 65 admissible number of students per year accredited for 5 years and Bachelor of Events and Hospitality Management with 80 admissible number of students per year for seven years.

Prof. Mary J. N Okwakol, the Executive Director NCHE said the programmes takes immediate effect and warned the university against teaching programmes that are not accredited.

“I wish to remind you that under Section 119(A) of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, 2001 (as amended), you shall not runa any academic programmes that have not been accredited by NCHE. I urge your staff to implement these programmes in accordance with the regulations of NCHE,” said Prof. Okwakol.

He noted that the council officers during their periodic administrative and monitoring visits to the institution shall  review implementation of these programmes.

Dr. Lawrence Muwanga, the Vice Chancellor for Victoria University welcomed the accreditation describing it as “Great News” to the university.

“Great news! The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) has accredited Victoria University’s Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Degree Program. Ugandans are invited to join Victoria University and become part of the esteemed legal fraternity (the ‘Learned Friends’). Our innovative LLB program goes beyond traditional legal education, offering additional expertise in digital mastery and AI proficiency”, Dr. Muganga posted on his X platform.

Shortly after receiving Prof. Okwakol’s letter, the university took on their official social media platforms saying that the accreditation testifies quality education they provide.

“This is a significant achievement and a testament to the high quality of education and training that the university provides.Well done to all the faculty, staff, and students who have worked hard to make this possible. This accreditation will undoubtedly open up new opportunities”, read a post on Victoria University official X platform , formerly Twitter.

With this accreditation, Victoria University joins the list of 15 institutions in Uganda accredited to teach law, alongside other reputable universities such as Makerere University and Kampala International University.

At least 14 institutions have been accredited to teach law in Uganda by May 2024, as published by the Law Council Committee on legal training. They include Makerere university, Kampala International University (KIU), Nkumba University – Entebbe, Uganda Christian University (UCU) Mukono, Uganda Pentecostal University (UPU) Fort Portal, Islamic University In Uganda (IUIU) Mbale, IUIU Kibuli Kampala, Bishop Stuart University (BSU) Mbarara, King Caesar University Kampala, Cavendish University Kampala, Gulu University – Gulu, International University in East Africa (IUEA) Kampala, IUIU Kabojja Kampala, Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi and now Victoria University as the 15th institution.
