The government has been asked to close with immediate effect Kitezi landfill and identify a new site for waste disposal. On Saturday, the Kiteezi landfill collapsed, leading to the death and injury of people and cattle. Property was also destroyed.

Mulindwa Walid Lubega, Deputy Secretary of Publicity in charge of Publication and Documentation at Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) said at a press briefing on Monday that Kitezi landfill has become a death spot to human life to both residents and neighbouring communities. He suggested for its immediate closure to prevent risks to human life and environment.

“We urge the government to provide immediate humanitarian to the affected individuals, including provision of shelter and food, psycho-social support, relocation and resettlement of those living near the landfill,” said Mulindwa.

The FDC further proposed for a public private partnership between the government and private entities to provide a comprehensive sustainable solution for solid waste management challenges as well as addressing the crisis in Kitezi.
“This approach can leverage private sector expertise and resources to improve waste collection, disposal and recycling services, and ensure a cleaner and healthier environment for Kampala residents,” Mulindwa explained.

President Museveni on Saturday ordered an investigation into the matter, tasking the Deputy Inspector General of Government (IGG), Anne Muhairwe, with leading the inquiry. He has also instructed the State House Comptroller to provide financial assistance to the families of the victims, offering Shs5 million per deceased person and Shs1 million per injured person. This financial aid according to the President, is separate from any legal compensation that may be forthcoming if a government agency (KCCA) is found responsible for the disaster.

Uganda Police, Uganda Red Cross Society reported that 21 dead bodies have been retrieved and taken to the City Mortuary Mulago.
