The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has ordered the shutdown of 11 radio stations across the country for operating illegally and non-compliance with broadcasting standards.

The UCC Executive Director, Nyombi Thembo on Tuesday afternoon raised concerns over the increasing number of illegals broadcasting stations operating across the country.

He outlined the commission’s ongoing enforcement efforts to address the issue, warning operators engaged in unlawful broadcasting activities.

The stations include; Mayuge 99.3 FM in Mayuge district,Kasanda 98.8 FM in Mubende, Green Radio 104.3 FM in Mubende, Community Green Radio 103.9 in Kiboga Town Council, Mpororo 89.8 FM in Ntungamo, California 103.6 FM in Kiryandongo, Miracle 98.2 FM in Sembabule, Lwamata FM in Kiboga District, Ngabu 89.9 FM in Bunyangabu, Voice of Bukuya 89.5 FM in Kasanda District, and Eye FM (Nalugooli) – 94.6 in Iganga.

The decision to close these stations was reached following an investigation into the stations’ operations and aired content, which Nyombi said, breached standards related to unethical programming, and failure to adhere to licensing agreements.

“Non-compliant radio stations, which were initially granted frequency assignments, are reportedly violating their license terms. These violations include failure to renew compliance certificates, non-payment of license fees, overmodulation, and using unauthorized equipment. Such stations also broadcast content that fails to meet the minimum standards set by the UCC,” he said

According to the commission, these actions lead to signal interference and a decline in the overall quality of broadcasting services.

Additionally, the commission noted that the unauthorized use of frequencies by illegal stations interferes with licensed operators and critical frequency users, such as aviation and security services.

Nyombi announced that they have already initiated enforcement measures, which includes shutting down illegal stations, confiscating their equipment, and prosecuting the operators.

“The commission has issued a final warning to all non-compliant and illegal broadcasters, urging them to cease operations immediately or face legal consequences,” UCC Executive Director said in a September 17, statement.
