Speaking at the Democratic Party press briefing on 8th October, 2024, Kiirya Ismail the Uganda Young Democrats President who is also the acting DP party spokesperson expressed concerns over the deteriorating diplomatic relations between Uganda and other foreign missions.

Kiirya highlighted the escalating unprofessional acts of some government officials, including ambassadors and high-ranking officers in the UPDF, which have led to threats against neighboring countries and foreign ambassadors.

The party cited recent incidents, including threats made by the CDF Gen Muhoozi Keinerugaba against Kenya and the US Ambassador, William W. Popp, which resulted in an ultimatum for the ambassador to leave the country. The Democratic Party emphasized that an attack on an ambassador is equivalent to an attack on the foreign country they represent.

The party urged the Ugandan government, particularly the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to take immediate action to restore the country’s diplomatic image. They also called on President Yoweri Museveni to reconsider the appointment of the current CDF, who is also his son, citing concerns over his fitness for the role.”We demand for CDF’s resignation “added Kiirya.

Meanwhile, Uganda is set to celebrate its 62nd Independence Day on October 9, 2024, at Busikho Teachers Demonstration Primary School Grounds in Masafu Town Council, Busia District, under the theme “Independence Day: A Re-commitment to Secure and Fortify Our Destiny”

The celebrations come amidst concerns over the state of governance, health, finance, education, and human rights in the country. The Democratic Party questioned whether the current state of affairs is worth celebrating, citing issues such as political prisoners, human rights violations, a broken healthcare system, and a crippling debt burden.
