Police in Ntungamo District are actively investigating a tragic road accident that occurred on the Ntungamo-Kabale Highway, resulting in the deaths of two people. The accident happened on Friday, November 1, at 6:35 p.m. near Kyamugashe in Katinda, Ntungamo.
According to AIP Bernard Manzi, the officer in charge of traffic at Rubaare Police Station, the collision involved a speeding motor vehicle with registration number UBN 677/T, driven by 49-year-old Gerald Jakwonga, an employee of the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), and a motorcycle with registration number UGH 828/T, ridden by Henry Tibesigwa, a 37-year-old boda boda rider from Kyamugashe stage.
AIP Manzi explained that the incident occurred when Tibesigwa, who was riding with a passenger, suddenly turned right without signaling, leading to a collision with the oncoming NEMA vehicle. The impact seriously injured both Tibesigwa and his passenger, 17-year-old Miracle Aryatwijuka, a Senior Four student at Ruyonzya Seed Secondary School. Tragically, both succumbed to their injuries shortly after the accident. Tibesigwa died upon arrival at Karuhanga Doctor’s Referral, while Aryatwijuka died en route to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.
Eyewitnesses say a boda boda rider at Kyamugashe stage, claimed that the driver of the NEMA vehicle failed to see Tibesigwa’s signal as he turned. The driver reportedly said that his vehicle’s brakes had failed, complicating his ability to avoid the collision.
The scene was documented by AIP Manzi and his traffic team. The NEMA vehicle has been impounded at Rubaare Police Station pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV). Authorities are also attempting to locate the motorcycle, which was reportedly removed from the scene by unknown individuals following the incident.
Police investigations into the accident are underway.
