The Democratic Party, through its acting spokesperson Ismail Kiirya, has requested the Ministry of Works and Transport to expedite the renovation of Karuma Bridge, highlighting that people are experiencing significant hardships in travel due to the ongoing closure.
The Karuma Bridge, a vital link between Northern Uganda and the rest of the country, has was closed for repairs on September 23rd, 2024, after developing serious cracks that posed risks to road users. With the bridge closed, motorists traveling between Kampala and Gulu now face limited route options, causing delays, increased travel costs, and logistical challenges as they navigate alternative routes.
Kiirya further emphasized the challenges faced by travelers using the Murchison Falls National Park route, which is only open from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to protect wildlife after dark. This restriction means that travelers departing after 5:00 p.m. must take the longer eastern route, extending the journey between Kampala and Gulu to 552 kilometers, a significant increase in travel time.
“We are therefore requesting the Ministry of Works and Transport to expedite the renovation, as people are facing significant hardships in travel,” Kiirya stated.
The Democratic Party has urged the government to avoid delays leading up to Christmas, a crucial time for business transactions across districts. Additionally, the party has called on the government to consider constructing an alternative bridge to ensure continued connectivity in the event of future issues with the Karuma Bridge.
“The government should plan for another bridge so that if Karuma faces issues, we have an alternative. We cannot rely solely on one bridge connecting Northern Uganda with the rest of Uganda,” Kiirya added.
The closure of Karuma Bridge has highlighted the need for enhanced transport infrastructure in Northern Uganda. As the Ministry of Works and Transport moves forward with the repairs, the Democratic Party hopes its call for additional routes will be considered, helping to build a more resilient network for the region’s growing commerce and essential connections.
