A 57-year-old man in Rukiga district, Kigezi region has been arrested on allegations of aggravated defilement.
The suspect, Alfred Rukundo, is a resident of Kitaburaza cell, Nyakabungo ward, in Muhanga Town Council, Rukiga district. He allegedly defiled a 4-year-old minor (names withheld) who he infected with HIV/AIDS.
Police preliminary reports indicate that on November 27 at around 6pm, the suspect called the victim to his father’s house where he stays and lured her into the act. The victim’s mother, Charity Asiimwe was notified by a neighbor who saw them and the suspect was caught red-handed in the act.
A case of defilement was reported to Muhanga police station on Thursday (November 28) by the victim’s mother which swung into action.
The Kigezi region police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate said the suspect was arrested, and tested HIV positive.
“Rukundo (the suspect) confessed but claims was under the influence of alcohol. Was medically tested and found to be HIV positive. The victim was subjected to PEP,” he said.
Maate condemned the act and said the suspect will be arraigned to court as soon as investigations are completed.
On Monday, the police spokesperson, ACP Micheal Kituuma Rusoke appealed to traditional, and religious leaders use their influence to promote morality in their communities claiming that lack of moral integrity is the leading cause of child abuse related cases in Uganda.
