As the National Voters’ Register update exercise commenced on 19th January, Ugandan citizens aged 18 and above who are not yet registered to vote have been urged to seize the opportunity to register. This exercise also allows registered voters to transfer to new voting locations or verify their registration details.
Crispin Kaheru, an Election Observer and Member of the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC), highlighted the critical need for continuous and dynamic voter registration in Uganda. He noted that in the 2021 election, over 1.2 million first-time voters may have missed the opportunity to register due to early cutoff dates for the National Voters’ Register update.
“The country cannot afford to let that happen again and again,” Kaheru emphasized.
The National Voters’ Register update exercise started on 19th January and will run until February 10, 2025. The registration centers will be open daily from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, including weekends.
Kaheru has urged all Ugandan citizens to participate in this crucial exercise to ensure their voices are heard in the upcoming elections.
