The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has announced that it will elect its presidential flag bearer in June 2025 as part of preparations for the 2026 general elections.

The announcement was made by the party’s Electoral Commission chairperson, Hon. Boniface Toterebuka Bamwenda, during the release of the FDC’s 2025/26 electoral roadmap at the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi, Kampala, on Monday.

According to the roadmap, FDC party primaries at all levels will take place from April 21 to May 2, 2025, while post-primary processes, including petition hearings, will be conducted from May 10 to May 15, 2025.

Hon. Boniface Toterebuka Bamwenda, FDC Electoral Commission chairperson releasing the party’s electoral roadmap 2024/26 elections.

The party has set March 3, 2025, as the date to publicize the presidential flag bearer selection process. The nomination forms for interested candidates will be available on March 10 and 11, while the nomination process will take place on March 17 and 18, 2025, at the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi.

FDC’s Electoral Commission dismissed media reports suggesting that the party will not field a presidential candidate in the upcoming 2026 elections.

“The National Delegates Conference will elect the presidential flag bearer on June 20, 2025,” Toterebuka said.

Addressing journalists during the party’s weekly press briefing, FDC President Eng. Patrick Oboi Amuriat reaffirmed the party’s commitment to contesting in the elections and enhancing its performance across all elective positions.

“I wish to inform the general public that the party will fully participate in the 2026 elections,” Amuriat said. “We have already embarked on strategies to improve our performance, and we intend to field candidates for all elective positions.”

Internal Contest for the Flag

Sources within FDC have revealed internal discussions regarding who should hold the party’s presidential flag in 2026. Some party members are reportedly backing Secretary General and Budadiri West MP, Nathan Nandala Mafabi, while others support the incumbent, Eng. Patrick Oboi Amuriat. Additionally, party stalwart Moses Byamugisha, who has previously expressed interest in the position, is also expected to join the race.

In the 2021 general elections, FDC finished third, securing 3.26% of the total votes. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni won with 58.38%, while the National Unity Platform (NUP) came second with 35.08%.
