According to a letter issued by the Minister of State for Transport, the suspension takes effect from Tuesday, May 13, 2025. The decision was made after a meeting between the Ministry and Y.Y Coaches on Monday, May 12, 2025.

The first incident occurred on May 5, 2025, when a Y.Y bus with registration number UAV 701C crashed at Najja village in Buikwe District along the Kampala–Katosi–Jinja Highway. The crash resulted in the deaths of three people. Preliminary findings by Uganda Police indicated that the driver was at fault and remains on the run.

In a second incident, another Y.Y bus, registration number UAX 852F, was involved in a serious crash at Ayago on the Pakwach–Arua Highway. The bus, en route to Yumbe from Kampala, lost control while attempting to overtake another vehicle. No fatalities were confirmed in the second crash, but the severity prompted further concern.

“The two crashes point to recklessness by your drivers on the road and failure to control the conduct of your drivers, among other managerial concerns,” the Ministry stated in the letter.

On Monday, the minister of state for works and transport, Fred Byamukana threatened stringent punishments to bus companies and reckless drivers who have caused accidents over the past four months.

“…before the end of the day, the ministry would announce punishments for drivers responsible for recent fatal accidents,” he said.

The Ministry emphasized that the punishment aims to enforce accountability and enhance passenger safety on Ugandan roads.
