The fatal accident occurred at around 9:00 PM on May 20, 2025, and involved a Mitsubishi Fuso truck and three Toyota Hiace commuter taxis, alongside five motorcycles.

According to police, the driver of the truck, registration number UBB 422U, reportedly lost control at Wantoni Junction and veered into the opposite lane, ploughing into multiple vehicles and roadside food stalls.

The other vehicles involved were identified as UBP 359W, UAW 042E, and UAQ 398L (all Toyota Hiace vans), along with motorcycles UFL 976T (Bajaj), UFN 916P (TVS), UEU 698W (Bajaj), UDK 495B (Bajaj), and UDZ 777A (Bajaj).

The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety Publi Relations Officer, SP MIcheal Kananura said that three people died on the spot, while ten others including drivers, passengers, boda boda riders, and pedestrians, sustained injuries of varying severity.

Eyewitnesses said the truck appeared to be speeding downhill before the crash, though police are yet to confirm the exact cause.

“This was a horrific scene. The truck just rammed through everything in its path,” said James Kato, a boda boda rider who narrowly escaped the crash.

Emergency responders rushed the injured to nearby health facilities, including Mukono General Hospital, while the deceased were taken to Kawolo Hospital mortuary for postmortem.

By press time, the identities of the deceased had not yet been disclosed as authorities worked to notify the families.

Police said that all involved vehicles and motorcycles have been towed to the Mukono Police parking yard for inspection. Kananura urged motorists to exercise caution, especially during evening hours and at junctions known for heavy traffic.

The crash adds to a growing list of road carnages in Uganda, raising concerns over driver discipline and vehicle roadworthiness and the state of roads in the country, especially in the Kampala Metropolitan Area.
