The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has suspended all defence and military cooperation activities with the Federal Republic of Germany with immediate effect, citing concerns over the conduct of the German Ambassador to Uganda, His Excellency Mathias Schauer.
In an official statement issued on Sunday, UPDF spokesperson Col. Chris Magezi said the decision was based on credible intelligence reports indicating that Ambassador Schauer is allegedly involved in subversive activities within Uganda.
“The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has with immediate effect suspended all ongoing defence and military cooperation activities with the Federal Republic of Germany,” the statement read in part.
According to the UPDF, the ambassador is believed to be actively engaged with hostile pseudo political-military groups operating against the Ugandan government.
Col. Magezi added that the suspension would remain in place until the matter is fully resolved.
“The suspension will remain in force until the full resolution of the matter of the Ambassador’s involvement with hostile pseudo political-military forces operating in the country against the Ugandan government,” he stated.
The UPDF did not provide details on the nature of the alleged subversive activities or the specific groups involved. No comment had been received from the German Embassy in Kampala by press time.
Germany is one of Uganda’s key defence and development partners, with cooperation spanning training, logistics, and peacekeeping support. The suspension is expected to impact ongoing joint defence initiatives.
Efforts to get a response from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were still underway at the time of filing this report.
