Police in Nwoya District have recovered an SMG rifle believed to have been used in recent criminal activity that has terrorized residents in Paminyai Sub-county and surrounding communities.
The recovery followed a police operation on June 14, 2025, triggered by tip-offs from community informants in Nyamukino and Gotapwoyo villages. The informants reported suspicious movement of a white Ipsium vehicle, registration number UAP 032E, allegedly transporting 11 stolen goats.
According to Nwoya District Police, the vehicle was intercepted by local residents before law enforcement arrived at the scene. Police arrested one suspect, identified as Dicken Omony, 28, a broker from Pece-Laroo Division in Gulu City.
During interrogation, Omony reportedly cooperated with investigators and led officers to a hidden firearm. The SMG rifle was found abandoned near an electric pole in Purongo Subcounty, concealed in nearby bushland. Authorities confirmed the weapon was recovered without ammunition.
“We commend the vigilance and cooperation of the community. Their timely information was critical in neutralizing a threat and recovering a dangerous weapon,” said a police spokesperson.
Investigations are ongoing to trace the origins of the rifle and to apprehend other suspects connected to the theft and possible armed criminal activity in the area.
Police have urged the public to continue sharing information that can aid security efforts.
