MITOOMA

Former Ruhinda North MP aspirant, Nelson Nkwene Nuwahereza, has dismissed allegations that he was bribed to step down from the 2026 parliamentary race in favour of Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa.

Speaking during an e-conference with journalists on Friday evening, hours after news of his withdrawal broke, Nkwene said his decision was motivated by the need to promote unity and development in Ruhinda North rather than personal ambition.

Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa and Opposition’s Nelson Nkwene Nuwahereza.

“Ruhinda North is bigger than any politician,” Nkwene said. “My withdrawal is in recognition of the progress Rt Hon. Tayebwa has delivered for the people and his strong influence on national decision-making.”

Parrots Media earlier on Friday reported that Nkwene had officially pulled out of the race and endorsed Tayebwa ahead of the 2026 general elections. His move sparked widespread speculation that he had been promised lucrative government appointments in exchange for bowing out.

Nkwene, however, rejected the claims stating; “There have been no formal or informal discussions with Hon. Tayebwa about stepping down. I have not even spoken to him about this decision,” he said. “I’m not hunting for a job. I run my own businesses, including the Nelson Climate Research Institute, and I’m currently pursuing a PhD in Nigeria. I am not broke and I’m not looking for what to eat.”

He stressed that his political decisions are driven by principle, not inducements.

Nkwene also revealed plans to return to Uganda in September, saying he would initiate talks with other aspirants in Ruhinda North to back Tayebwa and potentially ensure he runs unopposed. He called on voters and supporters to rally behind the Deputy Speaker in both the NRM primaries and the general election.

“Divisive politics are affecting service delivery in Mitooma,” Nkwene added. “The infighting between camps must end. These are internal issues, and they can be resolved internally – but when they persist, it’s the people who suffer.”

While praising Tayebwa’s leadership and development track record, Nkwene urged him to increase focus on infrastructure, healthcare, and education, alongside his national legislative duties.
