ISINGIRO

Campaign activities for parliamentary aspirants in Isingiro South, Isingiro District are set to officially resume following a crucial mediation session between candidates and the leadership of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission. The announcement came from Dr. Tanga Odoi, Chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, during a pivotal meeting held at the party’s headquarters in Kyadondo, Kampala.

Dr. Odoi confirmed that the meeting resulted in key resolutions aimed at ensuring peaceful and orderly campaigning. A major outcome was the prohibition of joint campaign activities; each candidate is now mandated to develop and execute individual campaign strategies. Additionally, no aspirant may lead supporters away from designated venues, with violators facing possible disqualification.

Further measures include a directive requiring all candidates to obtain security clearance before conducting campaign activities in Ruyanga area. Dr. Odoi urged full compliance with these guidelines to foster a peaceful electoral environment.

These developments follow a temporary suspension of campaigns due to violent clashes among rival supporters from Maari’s and Bakunda’s camps which tragically led to two deaths and considerable property damage that included two Bajaj boxers and Toyota Harrier belonging to Hon Bakunda.

“The race for the Isingiro South constituency seat is heating up, with four candidates vying for the position. Incumbent MP Hon. Alex Bakunda is facing stiff competition from former contender Gilbert Rwabambari, who previously lost to Bakunda in a tight race. Also joining the contest are Maari Mujuni Asensio and Dodoviko Byarugaba, both determined to make their mark in the constituency’s political landscape.”

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abas Byakagaba, arrived in Isingiro District to meet with all NRM parliamentary candidates from Isingiro South. The meeting sought to harmonize campaign strategies and ensure adherence to both party and security agency protocols.

Ubaldo Bamunoba, Chief Political Commissar of the Uganda Police, revealed that the IGP’s visit is part of a broader initiative to restore order and uphold a peaceful election process. Bamunoba also disclosed that the police delegation had visited Lwemiyaga County, Ssembabule District, the previous day following another violent clash that claimed one life after which they they met the Rwizi region police officers in Mbarara.

According to Dr. Odoi, campaign activities in Isingiro South are expected to resume immediately following the IGP’s security briefing and joint engagement with the candidates today.
