Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) President Jimmy Akena has said he will contest for presidency despite court ruling barring him from seeking re-election.

On Friday, the High Court in Kampala led by Justice Bernard Namanya delivered a landmark ruling which injuncted Akena from further contesting for the position of UPC President, citing constitutional breaches within the party’s internal electoral process.

Justice Namanya’s ruling has effectively cleared the path for Dennis Enap, who is now set to contest unopposed for the UPC presidency,

However, addressing journalists on Saturday, Akena said he will contest for presidency in 2026 and on UPC ticket, claiming that he’s the only prepared leader to move UPC forward to national leadership.

“If it means that you are going to strip me off the UPC uniform , you will strip me but you are not going to stop me from taking this message forward, am going ahead to contest for presidency and I want to make that perfectly clear ,” Akena Jimmy said.

Akena has called for an Extra-Ordinary Delegates Conference to address the issues.

The conference, slated for Saturday, 26th July 2025 at 10:00 AM, will be held at the Northern Gateway Hotel and Lounge in Kamdini, Oyam District, according to an official notice issued from the Office of the UPC President.

“The meeting is being held in accordance with Article 13.3(3) of the UPC Constitution, which empowers the party president to convene an extraordinary delegates conference in response to urgent matters,” says Akena.

He emphasized the importance of the meeting in determining the future direction of the party amidst legal and leadership transitions.
