KAMPALA

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Tribunal has conclusively affirmed Hon. Felix Adupa Ongwech as the duly elected party flagbearer for Member of Parliament for Kioga County, Amolatar District, bringing an end to a legal challenge against his nomination.

The landmark ruling, delivered on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, dismissed two consolidated petitions, PT-210-2025 and PT-211-2025, which had sought to nullify Adupa’s victory in the party primaries.

The three-member panel, chaired by Martin Mbanza Kalemera with members Keneth Kipaalu and Deborah Nshenereirwe, ruled that the petitioners failed to provide conclusive evidence to prove their case against the MP aspirant.

In its detailed judgment, the tribunal addressed two key issues. Central to the petitioners’ case was the challenge to Hon. Adupa Ongwech’s academic qualifications. The tribunal found that the respondent had, in fact, “met the minimum academic requirements” and that no compelling evidence was presented to successfully challenge his eligibility to stand for the position.

With the failure of the petitioners to prove their claims on all issues, the tribunal exercised its authority under the NRM electoral laws.

“The consolidated petitions PT-210-2025 and PT-211-2025 are hereby dismissed,” the ruling stated, adding, “The election of the Respondent, Adupa Ongwech Felix as NRM flagbearer for Member of Parliament, Kioga Constituency, Amolatar District is accordingly upheld.”

The ruling was signed by the panel members and endorsed by John Muslino, the Chairperson of the NRM Election Disputes Tribunal.

Shortly after the ruling was received, a visibly relieved Hon. Adupa Ongwech addressed supporters and the media. He expressed his gratitude to the tribunal for their thoroughness and for upholding, what he termed, “the will of the people of Kioga County.”

Speaking to reports shortly after receiving the news of this ruling, Adios said he had forgiven all those who “mocked or blackmailed him” during the arduous petition process. He specifically mentioned his elder, Col. (Rtd) John Ongia, and fellow contender Carlos Opul.

He then urged them to set aside their differences and join him in a unified effort to mobilise support for the NRM and its flag bearers at all levels in the upcoming general elections.

The spirit of reconciliation was immediately evident, as Hon. Adupa was seen sharing a light, cordial moment with Carlos Opul, who in turn offered his congratulations on the legal victory.

This ruling clears the final hurdle for Hon. Felix Adupa Ongwech to officially carry the NRM flag into the parliamentary race for Kioga County, allowing the party to focus its efforts on a united campaign.
