Five people were on Tuesday, August 19, struck dead by lightning in Rwakashanga-Rwahi Village, Rwentobo Town Council, Rushenyi County, Ntungamo District.
The incident occurred at around 4 p.m. during a heavy downpour. Five people died instantly, while three others sustained injuries.
The deceased were identified as Edgar Taremwa, 38; Jackline Nduhukire, 44; Alexander Mwaka, 25; Hassan Tekoyote, 30; and an unidentified man suspected to be of Rwandan nationality.
According to reports, the group of eight had gone to plant onions in Ruhwabwoba and Kidede, both in Rwakashanga Cell. When the rain intensified, they sought shelter under a nearby veranda.
“As the doors were closed, lightning struck once, killing the five victims instantly,” Rwizi Region Police spokesperson Samson Kasasira said.
Police said four of the bodies have been handed over to their families for burial, while the unidentified victim’s body was taken to Itojo Hospital mortuary. The three survivors were rushed to nearby health facilities, treated, and later discharged in stable condition.
Residents said this was the third lightning strike in the area, with a recent incident killing livestock. They appealed to government to install lightning arrestors to protect lives and property.
