Ugqnda’s Security Minister Maj Gen. Jim Muhwezi, who also doubles as the Rukungiri District NRM Chairperson, has suffered a major political setback within NRM after losing the race for National Chairperson of the NRM (CEC) Veterans League. Gen. Muhwezi a bush war hero was defeated by Retired Lt. Moses Mushabe during internal party elections at the ongoing NRM Delegates’ Conference at kololo independence grounds on Monday.

Mushabe, a retired officer who also serves as the NRM Chairman for Isingiro District, a position he won with a commanding 89% margin of victory has strong grassroots connections among the veterans’ community, scooped overwhelming support of 1,047 Votes from delegates, leaving the minister trailing with a Total of 570 votes. The position attracted other two candidates that is ;walusimbi Jackson and kiwanuka Titus Eria who garnered 07 and 11 votes respectively.
The NRM Veterans League, a key section of NRM under the Central Executive Committee (CEC), plays an important role in mobilizing support among retired servicemen and women across the country.

Mushabe’s victory reflects growing calls for fresh and responsive leadership within the NRM veterans’ ranks, while analysts note that the result could have wider implications for Muhwezi’s political career both in Rukungiri and at the national level.
With Mushabe now in the driving seat of the veteran’s league and the veterans’ welfare which has reportedly remained neglected for so long, his leadership will be tasked and committed to addressing this gap by focusing on health support, overall well-being, and ending the cycle of poverty affecting Uganda’s veterans.
