Police in Mbarara City have launched investigations into a violent attempted robbery targeting the Regional Police Commander (RPC) of Rwizi Region, SSP Bangambaki Alfred, at his residence in Ruharo ward.
According to police spokesperson SP Kasasira Samson, the incident occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. when machete-wielding assailants ambushed the officer as he returned home. The attackers, who were reportedly lying in wait near his gate, were armed with pangas and supported by a motorcycle stationed on the access road.
The assailants damaged the RPC’s vehicle in an attempt to harm its occupants. In defensive retaliation, SSP Bangambaki engaged the attackers, fatally neutralizing one of them. The other that were in company fled the scene immediately after the confrontation.
According to the police report, Areeba Munda who was inside the vehicle, sustained facial injuries from shattered glass fragments during the attack.
The deceased assailant, whose identity has not yet been established, was transported to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital mortuary.
Police have intensified operations to track down the fleeing suspects and dismantle the criminal network behind the attempted robbery. Authorities have assured the public that security measures are being reinforced to prevent similar incidents.
SP Kasasira Samson emphasized that investigations are ongoing and urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activity.
