BUSHENYI
At least four people have been confirmed dead following a hit-and-run accident along the Bushenyi–Mbarara highway.
The accident occurred at around 2am near Peak Hotel in the early hours of Thursday morning, when a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UMA 992CA, was allegedly knocked by a yet-to-be-identified motor vehicle.
The deceased whose identities remain undisclosed were all passengers of the motorcycle, they included three males and one female. They all died on the spot.
SP Apollo Tayebwa, the spokesperson for Greater Bushenyi region police, said officers promptly responded to the scene and managed it in accordance with standard procedures. Bodies were transferred to KIU Teaching Hospital mortuary in Ishaka for postmortem examinations to establish the exact cause of death.
SP Tayebwa added that the driver of the vehicle involved, who fled the scene after the crash, but investigations are ongoing to trace him.
“Our efforts to trace the driver are still ongoing. We urge any member of the public with information regarding the whereabouts of the suspect to confidentially inform Bushenyi Police so that the families of the deceased can get justice,” SP Tayebwa said.
Police attributed the cause of the accident to suspected reckless driving, and appealed to motorists and other road users to strictly observe traffic rules and regulations to prevent avoidable loss of life.
