Police in Kampala is holding in detention a male suspect on allegations of attempted robbery at the residence of former Kawempe South member of parliament, Mubarak Munyagwa alias Mugati gwa Bata in Kyengera, Wakiso district.
On January 3, 2024, at around 3am, a gang armed with sharp objects broke into the residence of the former legislator in Kimbejja Cell, Budo Ward, Kyengera Town Council and injured his security guard on the head.
Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire said police rushed to the scene and prevented the robbers from accessing the residence following a timely reporting by the victim.
“A swift response led by the Division Police Commander prevented the assailants from gaining access to Hon Munyagwa’s home. The timely reporting by Hon Munyagwa and the rapid response of the police team on patrol played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of life and property,” said Owoyesigyire.
Police introduced K9 units to the scene but was hindered by the heavy downpours.
Additionally, one arrest according to Owoyesigyire has been made and the suspect is in detention to aid in investigation.
“Despite the challenging weather conditions, one suspect attempting to flee the scene in a Datsun pick-up with registration number UAK 182A was apprehended. The suspect is currently in custody, aiding ongoing police investigations,” Police reported.
Police says none of the occupants inside the residence was harmed while the injured security guard was rushed to Mulago for medical treatment.
Police has also dismissed reports of shooting at Munyagwa’s home noting that the robbers were only armed with sharp objects.
“On contrary to misleading social media posts, no shooting occurred at Hon Munyagwa’s residence. The assailants were armed only with sharp objects. We commend Hon Mubarak Munyagwa for promptly reporting the incident, enabling the police to respond effectively and prevent further harm,” Owoyesigyire explained.
