Two people have died after large stones rolled from a nearby hill and crashed into their house while they were asleep.
The incident occurred in Kogorogoro Village in Mutungo Parish, Nyakishana Sub-county, about midnight on February 22, 2026.
SP Apollo Tayebwa, the Greater Bushenyi Regional police spokesperson identified the deceased as Deus Gumisiriza Deus, 40, and his wife Evalyne Nyamwiza.
Preliminary findings indicate that two large stones dislodged by earth tremors rolled down into the valley, broke through the roof of the couple’s semi-permanent house and landed on their bed, killing them instantly as they slept.
Police responded to the scene and found the victims already dead.
“Fortunately , the couple’s six children, who were also inside the house at the time, were not injured,” SP Tayebwa said.
Postmortem examinations showed that Nyamwiza sustained fatal chest injuries, while Gumisiriza suffered severe abdominal injuries and an open compound fracture of the left arm.
Further investigations revealed that the stones had previously been disturbed by digging activities around them, which left them loose and vulnerable to movement during the tremors.
The bodies were handed over to relatives for burial as investigations continue.
Police urged residents, especially those living in hilly and mountainous areas, to avoid destabilising large rocks and to remain vigilant during periods of earth tremors and heavy rains.
