The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has temporarily suspended routes at Kazinga channel bridge at Katunguru following rehabilitations.
“UNRA informs the general public of impending temporary closure of the Kazinga channel bridge at Katunguru on Hima-Katunguru road for emergency rehabilitation works,” read UNRA notice.
According to a letter dated May24th, the closure which started on June 2nd Is expected to last for a period of three months.
“The closure is expected to last between June 2nd and September 2nd, 2021.”
UNRA has further provided a ferry to operate as an alternative means of Transport.
Sources at Katunguru told Parrots UG that the provided ferry is on a test ready to start operations.
The provided ferry has a seating capacity of 50 passangers and can carry six cars of saloon, pickups and minivans/Taxis type per crossing.
UNRA say the ferry is not permitted to carry heavy-loads like Trailers and Buses which usually carry heavy cargoes in their undercarriage.
Drivers of heavy-duty vehicles have been advised to use the revised alternative route charts as indicated below;
● Kamese via Mbarara: Kampala-Mbarara-Ibanda-Kamwenge-Fort Portal-Kasese.
● Mbarara to Kasese: Mbarara-Ibanda-Kamwenge-Fort Portal-Kasese.
● Mpondwe to Kasese: Mbarara-Ibanda-Kamwenge-Fort Portal-Kasese.
● Mpondwe to Mbarara or Kampala via Mbarara: Mpondwe-Kasese-Fort Portal-Ibanda-Mbarara then to Kampala.
● Mpondwe to Ishaka / Kabale Katuna via Ishaka: Mpondwe-Kasese-Fort Portal-Kamwenge-Ibanda-Mbarara-Ishaka and vice versa on return journeys.
However, the route from Kampala to Kasese via Fort Portal has not been affected and usual travel routes will according to a temporary route chart by UNRA be used.
