The Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese, His Grace Paul Semogerere has urged christians to respond with generosity and kindness in support of the victims of the recent Kitezi landfill collapse.
Speaking during a Holy Mass to celebrate Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Kiwamirembe Catholic Shrine, Archbishop Semogerere emphasized the importance of compassion and solidarity during times of tragedy.
The Archbishop’s appeal comes after the devastating Kitezi landfill collapse, which claimed the lives of 30 people and left many more injured and displaced. The disaster has sparked widespread outrage and calls for improved waste management practices.
Archbishop Semogerere responded to criticism that the Catholic Church has been silent on supporting the victims, explaining that the Catholic Church’s support for victims is often channeled through the collective efforts of its members. He stressed that when Catholics donate or volunteer, they act as representatives of the Church, and embody its spirit of compassion and solidarity.
“I talked about the Kitezi incident in the homily, I encourage you to offer offer spiritual and material support to those affected by the tragedy especially the young children who lost their parents, as catholics and the church, it’s always important to remember those who are suffering and offer our assistance.”
Hundreds of pilgrims from different parts of the country today (August 15) filled Kiwamirembe catholic shrine to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary. Mass was led by Archbishop Semogerere as the main celebrant, flanked by priests from different parishes in and outside Kampala Archdiocese, and many religious men and women from different congregations.
