Police have blocked the leader of Peoples Front for Transition (PFT),  Rtd. Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye from proceeding to the Soroti to campaign for Moses Attan, the FDC candidate in the Soroti East by election

Earlier today, the party had announced that Dr. Besigye will be joining a team of FDC officials to campaign for their candidate.

“Today, it is a beautiful day in Soroti East, Our campaign trail will be joined by our Founding President Rtd. Col. Dr Kizza Besigye, who will campaign for our candidate Hon.Moses Attan Okia.And also use this by-election platform to awaken the people of the Teso region.” FDC posted on Social Media

According to the party, Besigye was expected to join Attan’s campaign team at Otatai and Kikyinjaji wards in Soroti East county Soroti city

He was however intercepted by police which blocked him from proceeding to his journey.

Besigye together with political activist Samuel Lubega Mukaku were according to reports at IGAR PETROL STATION where they were having breakfast when police blocked them.

The duo was forced to return to Kampala on the orders of Jinja Regional Police Commander.

FDC party officials also confirmed to this publication on the blockade reports.

“Yes, it’s true. Dr. Kizza Besigye was Scheduled to join the FDC team in Soroti today but was intercepted by police in Jinja.”

Three candidates are vying for the Soroti East parliamentary seat in a hotly contested by election. They are Pascal Amuriat (UPC), Herbert Ariko (NRM) and Moses Okia Attan (FDC). However, the front runners in the election are Attan and Ariko.

According to Catherine Eyuku, the Soroti district EC returning officer, campaigns for directly elected members of Parliament and directly elected municipal councillors started on July 21 and will close on July 26.

Polling for directly elected members of Parliament and directly elected municipal councillors is scheduled to take place on on Thursday 28th July 2022, starting from 7am to 4pm.
