Bubangizi Senior Secondary School alumni community on Sunday (November 5) launched their Alumni League aimed to promoting social networking and unity amongst the old students.
The Alumni League dubbed “Bubz League” is the first of its kind in the history of Bubangizi. It was launched at Prime Arena in Kawempe Division, Nansana Municipality, Kampala district.
At least four teams namely Ensolo SC, Akareere FC, Rwekisigazi FC and Hunters FC have been registered to take part in this tournament.
The teams are named after the popular jargons and slangs used by the students during their stay in the school. For instance, Ensolo SC is named after a nickname of the long serving and current Headteacher, John Barigye due to his strength to demand for excellence. Hunters FC, is a slang for escapees who were used to taking a french leave to go and steal sugarcanes, sweet bananas and fruits from the neighbouring community like Kanyabwanga, Bubangizi parish farm, Kiyanga among others. A term which students named ‘hunting’.
On the other hand, Akareere FC is christened to a group of then young boys who would spend most of their leisure time playing banana leaf football while the bookwormers remained in classrooms and library for group discussions and research.
Owen Nahwera, the league chairman says the initiative is to bring together former students, both males and females from all walks of life for building strong social networks as well as ideation to provide lasting solutions to possible challenges faced by their school through games and sports.
“We hope to have our final match played at Bubangizi SSS. We look forward to providing career guidance and counselling to there,” said Nahwera.
Pankarasio Mugisha, a businessman in Kampala dealing in electronics and one of the initiators of the league idea appealed to old students from different parts of the country to form their playing teams and register for participating in the league.
He challenged the big number of students who went through the gates of Bubangizi compared to the low turn up of teams registration which he says is a disservice to the alma mater.
Speaking during the launch ceremony, Africano Bainobwengye, an old student and teacher at the same school commended old students for coming up with such a great initiative and pledged to support the league and other alumni ideas. He was representing the league Patron, Headteacher John Barigye.

The Patron’s representative further challenged senior old boys and girls in the public service and private sector to solicit resources to support the league. He also attributed the school’s best performance in both academics and co-curriculars to efforts by old students and disclosed that the school is already supporting former students through employment as teaching and support staff.
