The Bishop of Kabale Catholic Diocese, Rt. Rev. Callist Rubaramira has suspended a priest on allegations of financial impropriety and dishonesty.
In a letter dated November 12, 2024, copied to Archbishop Luigi Bianco, the Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda, Bishop Rubaramira informed that Fr. Ignatius Arinaitwe is prohibited from performing any priestly duties, both within Kabale Diocese and in any other dioceses, whether in Uganda or abroad. The bishop expressed regret about this suspension and requested prayers for the priest.
“I do request for your kind prayers for this priest so that he may seriously reflect on his priestly commitment and the grave consequences of his crime,” Bishop Rubaramira said.
While the letter does not provide specific details, sources within the diocese indicate that Fr. Arinaitwe has been under scrutiny for the past two years. Allegedly, he used his position as a priest to obtain loans from businessmen and money lenders in different areas, but failed to repay them.
At the time of his suspension, Fr. Arinaitwe was serving in the administration department at the diocesan headquarters. He is also the founder and executive director of a non-profit organization called Good Samaritan Ministries for Batwa Action (GSMBA), which advocates for the rights of marginalized groups, especially the Batwa (Pygmies).
