The Democratic Party (DP) has asked government to provide clear guidelines to help victims of disasters.
The remarks were made by Ismail Kiirya, the Acting DP spokesperson at their headquarters on Tuesday May 7.
“As Democratic party we are concerned about the government’s strategy to manage the aftermath of the disasters than managing the causes of these disasters,” Kiirya said.
According to Kiirya, the guidelines will help people to recover their damaged property after disasters such as floods and landslides.
On Thursday last week, Kasese and Bunyangabo experienced heavy rainfall which lasted for over four hours causing devastating mudslides leading to death of seven people in Kasese and three from Bunyangabo. Hundreds of people were displaced and crops damaged.
DP suggests that parliament should come up with a supplementary budget to bail out the affected persons in the region.
They also asked the government to protect the environment than allocating gazzated lands like wetlands to foreign investors.
“Places which are prone to mudslides, let government encourage more tree planting and also discourage deforestation.”
