The Democratic Party (DP) has asked the government to prioritize and allocate funds for the long-overdue LC1 and LC2 chairpersons’ elections. At a press conference held today, July 9, 2024, at the party headquarters, DP spokesperson Kiirya Ismail expressed concern over the repeated extensions of the term of office for LC1 and LC2 chairpersons, which he believes is an attempt to delay elections.
“The government’s failure to allocate funds for these elections is a clear indication of their disregard for the welfare of Ugandans,” Ismail said. “LC1 and LC2 chairpersons play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our communities, and it is imperative that we elect new leaders to fill these positions.”
He also congratulated the newly appointed police spokesperson, Afande Kituuma Rusoke, on his recent appointment and urged him to uphold police ethics and integrity in his new role.
Kiirya Ismail, spokesperson for the Democratic Party, has urged the Ugandan government to follow Kenya’s example in addressing public concerns. He cited the recent withdrawal of the Finance Bill 2024 by President William Ruto in response to protests, and encouraged the Ugandan government to similarly prioritize the needs of its citizens.
The party’s call comes at a time when the country is grappling with numerous challenges, including poverty, unemployment, and insecurity. The DP believes that electing new LC1 and LC2 chairpersons will help address some of these issues at the grassroots level.
