LUZIRA UPPER PRISON
Renowned Ugandan opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye has shared a moving Christmas message from Luzira Upper Prison, where he is currently detained. In a handwritten letter dated December 23, 2024, Dr. Besigye reflects on the themes of freedom, justice, and love, drawing parallels between the struggles faced by biblical figures and the modern-day fight for justice in Uganda.
Dr. Besigye recounts the oppression of the Jewish people under Roman rule during the time of Jesus Christ, describing the brutality of leaders like King Herod and Pontius Pilate. He uses these stories to inspire those who continue to resist oppression, urging them to remain steadfast in their pursuit of justice and freedom.
Retired Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye is spending the festivities in Upper Prison Luzira where he was remanded until January 7, 2025 on accusations of ammunition and firearms. He is being co-accused with his long time friend Obeid Lutaale Kamulegeya.
Quoting from the Gospel of Luke, he highlights Jesus’ mission to “proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind,” emphasizing that the fight for freedom is both a divine calling and a universal human right.
Besigye called for hope and perseverance, and reminded oppressed Ugandan citizens that the values of freedom and justice are worth every struggle. He concludes his letter with the rallying cry, “We Shall Overcome!”
Dr. Besigye has long been a symbol of resistance against the authoritarian government of President Museveni which on several occasions has resulted in heightened tensions in the country. He is widely regarded as the most arrested and detained opposition politician in Uganda’s history. Notably, no court in Uganda has ever found him guilty of the charges brought against him, suggesting that these charges are politically motivated.
