The Electoral Commission has today (January 27) released the roadmap for the highly anticipated Kawempe North Member of Parliament by-election.
The Kawempe North MP seat became vacant following the death of the former MP, Muhammad Ssegirinya on January 9.
Ssegirinya was pronounced dead at Rubaga Hospital, Kampala after he succumbed to multiple organs failure.
The EC has also released a program for the Kazo-Angola Ward City Division Councilor by-election. The program will include key activities update and displaying of voters’ register, nomination of candidates by the office of the area returning officer, electoral campaigns among others leading up to the polling day.
Campaigns for Kawempe North MP seat are scheduled to begin on 28th February and will run until 11th March, giving candidates ample time to engage with voters and present their manifestos.
On 13th March, 2025, voters will head to the polls to elect new representatives for the two contested positions.

More than 10 people have so far expressed interests in running for Kawempe North MP seat in the forthcoming by election. The aspirants include Moses Ali Jjemba, an NRM carder, and resident of Mbogo Village; Elias Luyimbaazi Nalukoola, a renowned city lawyer eyeing the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket, Salim Serunkuuma, a businessman and former candidate; Mathias Mulumba, alias Kikumi Kya Doola, the LC1 chairman of Corner Zone; Onemus Mutumba; Tom Fisher Kasenge and Juliet Namale from the NRM party; Umar Magala, Muhamood Mutazindwa, Kulya Soul Zziwa from NUP; and Alex Luwemba, the former aide to the late Ssegirinya.
Kawempe North constituency consists of nine parishes including Kawempe I, Bwaise I, Kazo-Angola, Kawempe II, Kanyanya, Kyebando, Kikaaya, Komamboga, and Mpererwe. None of the aspirants have been confirmed as candidates by their respective political parties.
The Electoral Commission chairperson , Justice Simon Byabakama has urged all registered voters in both Kawempe North and Kazo-Angola Ward to ensure their details are updated ahead of the by-election.
