KAMPALA

With just days to go before the official nomination of presidential candidates, the Electoral Commission has issued updates to aspirants regarding the status of their submitted supporter lists, in accordance with Section 10 of the Presidential Elections Act.

As of Friday, September 19, the Commission had notified 27 out of the 38 aspirants who have submitted their lists. Of those, only two aspirants have met the legal requirement of securing at least 9,800 supporters—drawn from a minimum of 100 registered voters in each of at least two-thirds of Uganda’s 146 districts, which translates to 98 districts.

The remaining aspirants are at various stages of compliance, with the Commission continuing to verify the authenticity of the submitted signatures. The verification process is designed to ensure full adherence to the law, particularly the stipulations that each supporter must provide their name, signature, physical address, and voter registration number, as outlined in Schedule 4 of the Act.

The Commission also reminded aspirants and the public of the legal consequences for duplicate endorsements. Section 10(4) prohibits any voter from supporting more than one candidate, and violators face penalties of up to UGX 480,000 or imprisonment for up to one year or both.

Julius Mucunguzi, Spokesperson for the Electoral Commission, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to a transparent and lawful nomination process:

“The verification of supporters is an elaborate process meant to fulfill the dictates of the law. We remain committed to ensuring that the nomination exercise of presidential candidates and all other elective positions is conducted in full compliance with the relevant Electoral Laws.”

The Commission further reminded all aspirants that the official nomination dates are set for September 23 and 24, 2025, at the Electoral Commission premises in Lweza–Lubowa, Makindye Ssabagabo.

As the nation prepares for the upcoming elections, the Commission urges all stakeholders to uphold the integrity of the process and ensure that all legal requirements are met.

Parrots Media learned that only FDC and NRM presidential candidates, Nathan Nandala Mafabi and President Museveni respectively, had met the required signatures by Saturday evening.
