In celebration of International Women’s Day, Florus Crafts, a renowned African crafts company founded by Twongirwe Doreen,  has shown commitment to empowering women in local communities.

Located at Hosma Building on Level 2 Mbaguta Street, Florus Crafts specializes in creating a variety of traditional African crafts such as shoes, baskets, wall hangings, bags, and emigamba, all under the motto “Keep it African”.

Despite facing challenges such as price fluctuations and stiff competition, particularly from imported goods, Twongirwe remains steadfast in her mission to preserve and promote African culture through her unique handcrafted products.

Twongirwe revealed to our reporter that one obstacle the company has faced is the widespread belief that only products from certain countries, such as China, can be deemed as authentic. However, Florus Crafts challenges this notion by showcasing the beauty and quality of locally made goods,”said Twongirwe”

Twongirwe addresses societal norms and biases regarding gender roles by actively involving and empowering women in the craft-making process. Recognizing the importance of inclusivity and equality, the company seeks out women from rural villages, providing them with the necessary skills and opportunities to create and sell their crafts. By supporting these women, Florus Crafts not only aims to boost their incomes but also to enhance their economic independence and overall well-being.

Through its dedication to empowering women and promoting African culture, Florus Crafts sets a shining example of how businesses can make a positive impact on society. This International Women’s Day, let us celebrate Florus Crafts for its unwavering commitment to uplifting women and preserving the rich heritage of African craftsmanship.

Twongirwe calls upon all women to try and learn something out of their profession. She said this has enabled her to earn a living to boost her income.
