KAMPALA
In a heartfelt open letter, former Kabale District Woman MP Ninsiima Ronah Rita has appealed to Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among to exercise humility, empathy, and restraint in her leadership, urging her to prioritize the welfare of Ugandans over personal luxury.
Addressing the Speaker as “Mum,” Ninsiima invoked faith and moral reflection, citing recent media reports alleging the acquisition of a Rolls Royce vehicle by the Speaker. She warned that such extravagance risks eroding public trust and tarnishing her legacy.
“Madam Speaker, a good name is better than silver and gold. Be kind to the children you will leave behind because of the curse that will come with Royce,” she wrote.
The former legislator contrasted the alleged purchase with the dire realities faced by ordinary Ugandans, particularly in the health sector. She urged Speaker Among to redirect resources toward humanitarian causes such as constructing accommodation blocks for cancer patients who currently sleep on hospital floors.
Ninsiima also referenced advice from Makerere University’s Dr. Spire, who had earlier encouraged leaders to remain relatable to citizens in both behavior and appearance. She noted that while the Speaker had toned down her dress code, the Rolls Royce “has killed and is slowly burying you if you do not do something about it.”
The letter further called on the Speaker to emulate her predecessors, who she said chose integrity, empathy, and selfless service over lavish spending.
“Serve well in your next term and enable other young Ugandans to be able to serve in that role too without being discarded by your Party’s CEC because of the current negative legacy,” Ninsiima appealed.
She concluded by praying that the Speaker’s media team would allow her to access the “disturbing thoughts of Ugandans” so she could reflect and adjust her actions for the good of both her family and the institution of Parliament.
