The government has been urged to increase funding for healthcare and boost surveillance and testing in treatment facilities across the country following the outbreak of mpox disease in Kasese district.
Keno Charles Musanyusa, the Democratic Party (DP) chairman of Nakawa division in Kampala expressed concerns about lack of enhanced public health measures to combat disease outbreaks in Uganda.
On Friday last week, the ministry of health confirmed that two individuals in Kasese district tested positive for mpox. They are a 37-year-old woman from Mpondwe Lhubiriha Town Council, and a 22-year-old Congolese woman from Bunyiswa II village, Bwera subcounty, Kasese District.
“Both individuals presented with symptoms such as skin rash, swollen lymph nodes, and general malaise, which are consistent with Mpox,” the Ministry stated.
This was after the test results of the blood samples taken from the suspects at the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) revealed the presence of mpox virus in the samples.
