KABALE:
Officials from the Inspectorate of Government (IG) are worried about the increasing cases of absenteeism by health workers in Kabale District Kigezi sub-region.
On Saturday, IG officials paid an impromptu visit to some of the health centers in the district to as part of the activities to mark the Anti-Corruption Week across the country, but were shocked after finding that many health workers were absent on duty.

At Kamukira HCIV in Southern Division Kabale municipality, a team of IG officials led by the Deputy IGG Annne Muheirwe Twinomugisha and the Kigezi regional office head Sam Agaba were shocked after finding the hospital closed with only one nurse found at the facility.
According to the inspectorate, they arrived at the facility at around 3:30PM and found one of the nurses on duty sleeping and not in a uniform.
The deputy IGG then made repeated calls to the hospital in charge Daniel (surname not disclosed)who upon questioning said he was in Kabale town not disclosing what he was doing.
The deputy IGG said her office is going to liaise with the ministry of health to investigate on health workers at Kamukira HCIV.
Uganda loses over Shillings 2 billion annually on acts of absenteeism of health workers
at hospitals. This according to Twinomugisha has resulted into dishonesty and other forms of corruption in the health sector.
