US President Joe Biden has announced he has withdrawn from the country’s presidential election race in which he was seeking a reelection for a second term.
This followed pressure amounted to him by fellow Democrats who lost faith in his mental acuity and ability to beat Donald Trump in the election following the first presidential debate when the 81-year-old Biden lost his train of thought and struggled to articulate basic talking points.
More than 30 Congress members have since been publicly pushing for his exit. Other high-profile figures — including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — were reported to be encouraging Biden to step down behind the scenes.
The 46th US president’s departure from the race leaves the Democratic Party in an unprecedented situation, with only a month until the Democratic National Convention and less than four months until the November 5 election.
Democratic Party was yet to communicate their next cause of action and announce their candidate who will will face off Republican presidential nominee and former President Donald Trump.
In his withdrawal statement, Biden said the decision was for the good of all Americans especially his party – the Democrats and commended the Vice President Harris Kamala for extraordinary partnership with him.
