By Gilbert Akampa Kakurugu,

Mbarara

Tusiimire Wilber, the manager Mbarara branch of The AIDS Support Organization (TASO), disclosed today that Kakoba and Ruti are responsible for more than 80% of HIV infections in the region. This revelation was made during the TASO Mbarara charity run, which aimed to raise funds for the education of children under their care.

Wilber emphasized that the annual charity run is crucial in supporting orphaned children by covering their school fees. Last year’s event successfully assisted three children, and Wilber expressed gratitude to all participants for their contributions.

Acknowledging Mbarara’s high HIV burden, Wilber attributed it to hotspots such as Kakoba, Ruti, Biharwe, Koranorya, and Kiyanja. These areas have a high concentration of bars that attract sex workers. He urged individuals to prioritize protection if they cannot abstain or remain faithful to their partners.

Wilber also highlighted Uganda’s overall poor performance in HIV suppression. However, he commended Mbarara for achieving a commendable 99% suppression rate. He noted that the remaining margin is primarily due to children who struggle with treatment adherence due to various challenges.

The charity run was flagged off by Tweheyo Katana, a board member of TASO. Katana expressed gratitude to all participants and partners for their support. He emphasized that the event helps cover expenses that sponsors may not be able to fully address. Last year’s run enabled TASO to provide school fees for three children.

The winners of the 10km race were Akampa Victor from Ankole western university and Nayebare Asiima from Doctors plaza hospital who emerged as the first female in the 10km race. Aryamanya Anold from the Harm Reduction and Reproductive Health Initiative secured second place while Muzoora Conrad Junior was the youngest runner of the 10km race.

The TASO Mbarara charity run not only promotes physical fitness but also serves as a platform to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and support vulnerable children in the community.
