The clock is ticking, today, Friday, July 10, marks the final day for Ugandans to register at the village level for the upcoming Local Council and Women Council elections.The Electoral Commission (EC), which rolled out the one-week exercise on Monday, has urged all eligible citizens to rush and secure their spot on the register before 5 pm today.
Electoral Commission spokesperson Julius Musinguzi reminded Ugandans that anyone 18 years and above and residing in a given village must ensure their names appear in the village register and both the village register women’s register for women to allow them participate in the election.
“If you are not in the register, you will not be able to vote or contest for LC1 or Women Council positions,” Musinguzi emphasized.
Failure to register, Mucunguzi added means being locked out of the democratic process, no vote, no chance to stand for office.
The EC insists that “your vote counts”, calling the registration exercise a critical step in shaping grassroots leadership.
As the deadline looms, scenes of long queues and last-minute rushes are expected across villages, with citizens eager not to miss out on their constitutional right. The EC has set July 23 and July 28 for the election of Women Council members and local council One chairpersons, while polling for Local Council Two has been scheduled for August 10.
