In a move to combat the illegal possession and distribution of classified drugs, the National Drug Authority (NDA) conducted an intelligence-led operation in Kampala City, resulting in the seizure of government drugs worth over nine million Uganda shillings.
On September 6th, 2024, NDA officials raided a private residence located at Katongoles apartments in Namugoona-Kasubi, Kampala District, where they found a large stash of classified drugs, including anti-malarials and ARVs, marked “Government of Uganda Not for Sale”. The drugs were valued at approximately nine million Uganda shillings.
The operation led to the arrest of Mwesigye Aaron Michael, who is currently in police custody facing further investigation and legal action.
The NDA has warned all unlicensed operators to cease operations immediately and comply with legal requirements to sell medicines and healthcare products in Uganda. The authority has also appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected drug-related crimes on their toll-free line 0800 101 999 or WhatsApp line 0740 002 070.
Abiaz Rwamwiri said that the operation highlights the NDA’s commitment to ensuring the safety and quality of medicines in Uganda, and its determination to crack down on illegal activities that compromise public health.
“By confiscating these government drugs, the NDA has prevented them from entering the black market, where they could have been sold to unsuspecting individuals, potentially putting lives at risk”added Rwamwiri.
The public is urged to support the NDA’s efforts by only purchasing drugs from licensed pharmacies and drug shops, and reporting any suspicious activities to the authorities.
