A 40-year-old man in Rukungiri District has allegedly killed his wife before taking his own life in a suspected murder-suicide incident.
The incident occurred on Sunday in Rugando Village, Nyakinengo Parish, Nyakagyeme Sub-county.
The deceased have been identified as Cosma Tushabirane, 40, and his wife, Speria Ayebare, 34, both residents of Rugando Village.
According to an eyewitness, the couple had sent their children to church shortly before the incident.
“When the children returned, they found the house locked from inside. The eldest son forced the door open and entered, where he found his father’s body hanging,” the eyewitness said.
Police were notified and, during a search of the house, officers found Ayebare’s body lying in a pool of blood in the couple’s bedroom.
Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson SP Nelson Tumushime confirmed the incident, saying police had opened a case of suspected murder and suicide.
The bodies were conveyed to Rwakabengo Health Centre III for postmortem examination.
Police and residents urged members of the public to seek help from local leaders and other authorities to resolve family disputes rather than resorting to violence or taking the law into their own hands.
