The body of the deceased Orthodox church of Uganda leader, Metropolitan Archbishop Jonah Lwanga has been returned home from Greece aboard the Egyptian Air MS837.
Metropolitan Jonah Lwanga died on September 5, 2021 in Greece where he had been flown for treatment. He according to the church has been a known prostate cancer patient.
His body was received at Entebbe International Airport by among others Orthodox church leaders and government officials led by the Attorney General, Kiryowa Kiwanuka and Chief Whip Thomas Tayebwa.
Last week, the church released a program for the and according to the program, the deceased body today on Saturday at 9am arrived at the St. Nicholas Cathedral in Namungoona for public viewing whereafter a memorial holy mass was conducted in honor of the deceased. Mass was celebrated by His Eminence Makarios Tillyrides, the Archbishop Nairobi.
Tillyrides was recently appointed by the headquarters of the Orthodox Church in Africa as the caretaker of the Holy Metropolis of Kampala following Archbishop Lwanga’s demise.
The program will continue throughout Sunday with the holy liturgy and orthoros, signing of the condolence book and another public viewing.
Metropolitan Yonah Lwanga will be laid to rest on Monday, at Namungoona cathedral grounds.
President Museveni pledged to meet all the funeral and burial expenses for the late Archbishop Jonah Lwanga and appointed the Vice President, Jessica Alupo to oversee the burial preparations.
