The ministry of health on 6th March rolled out malaria vaccination in Uganda’s fight against malaria as the Minister, Hon. Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, received and flagged off over 2.1 million doses of malaria vaccine on March 6, 2025. These doses, part of a total shipment of 3.5 million, will be distributed to 105 districts with high and moderate malaria prevalence across the country.
The vaccines will officially be introduced into Uganda’s routine immunization schedule starting in April 2025, targeting children under two years old. This development is a crucial addition to existing malaria prevention efforts, as the disease continues to claim the lives of 10 children under five years old every day in Uganda.
“The malaria vaccine provides an added layer of protection, especially for young children, against severe malaria and death,” said Dr. Aceng during the flag-off event.
The Ministry of Health expressed its gratitude to international partners, including Gavi, UNICEF Uganda, WHO Uganda, the World Bank (UCREPP), PATH, and CHAI, for their support in ensuring that no child is left behind in receiving life-saving vaccinations.
This new initiative underscores Uganda’s unwavering commitment to eradicating malaria, paving the way for a healthier future for the nation’s youngest citizens. The rollout of this vaccine offers hope to millions of families and reaffirms the country’s determination to combat one of its most persistent health challenges.
