The minister of Information and Communication Technology Dr. Chris Baryomunsi has denied claims that the government has influences in the return of Rwenzururu King, Omusingha Charles Wesley Mumbere to his kingdom.
At the beginning of August, DPP Jane Frances Abodo dropped charges against His Majesty Mumbere and his 217 subjects because he had applied for amnesty.
This was after he had spent 7 years inside Luzira Prison on charges of murder, treason and aggravated robbery. He was arrested in 2016 and his palace destroyed leaving about 100 people dead.
Preparations are in high gears for the return of Omusingha due on tomorrow, Wednesday 4th October, 2023 in Kasese.
Addressing journalists at Media Centre today, minister Baryomunsi said the subjects are free to welcome their King but warned against violating the laws.
“Issues which led this arrest have been resolved by the kingdom and government and he is free to return and get back to his kingdom,” Baryomunsi warned.
He was responding to a question on government’s concerns about the King’s return given the political history of Kasese district known of voting largely opposition politicians.
He however dismissed the claims noting that government supports all Ugandans despite one’s religious, cultural and political affiliations.
Relatedly, the ICT minister further denied allegations that government is planning to shut down the internet on Thursday (October 5) when National Unity Platform leader, Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine will be returning to Uganda from Canada where he has been on official party duties.
“How’s is the shutdown of internet connected to his return?” Rhetorical Baryomunsi asked before denying knowledge of Bobi Wine’s foreign travel.
