The Territorial Police in Serere, has in custody a suspect on allegations of unlawful possession of a handmade gun.
The suspect is Emmanuel Augesa, 33, a former convict of murder.
It is alleged that Augesa jumped over the fence of Opolot Christine, 68, a retired nurse and resident of Alilimo cell, Akisim ward, Kyere Town Council, and threatened to shoot and kill her together with her house maid, Apokorit Rhoda, 30.
The victim’s alerted the immediate neighbours which forced the suspect to flee.
A complaint was thereafter, made at the police in Serere, and the suspect arrested from a bar in Kyere Town Council.
Police Spokesperson CP Fred Enanga has on Monday during a joint security brief told reports that police conducted a thorough search at the suspect’s home in Obul village, Serere district, and recovered a hand made ghost-gun which he has been using to terrorise the area.
According to Enanga, the recovered gun had a firing pin, magazine and was fully functional, after it was test-fired, with two bullets of an AK 47 rifle, by the suspect.
Police hascondemned illegal manufucturing of firerms in the country which they say are used by wrongdoers.
“We do strongly condemn the illegal manufacture of handmade guns, because they end up in the wrong hands of criminals who use them in senseless acts of violence and impunity. Such hand made guns have no serial numbers and therefore, cannot be traced in the database of guns fingerprinted.” Police said
Enanga has further applauded the community in Serere, for availing to police such a credible information.
He said the recovery of guns and other fireaems from criminals restores confidence and public safety within the country.
Augesa will be charged with being in illegal possession of a firearm, aims trafficking and dealing without a firearm licence, criminal trespass and threatening violence
