KAMPALA
Police have arrested 65 suspects in separate intelligence-led operations across Kampala Metropolitan as part of the security efforts to curb violent crime and robbery involving panga-wielding gangs.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Rachael Kawala, said 13 suspects were arrested on July 20, 2026, during an operation in Kikajjo Zone, Namasuba Parish, Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality in Wakiso district.
Police said the operation followed intelligence reports linking the group to a series of robberies committed using pangas in the area.
The suspects were identified as Bubegeye Yacob, Ssebyonjo Jokana, Mutenyo Kamad, Wamoya Andrew, Masaba Ben, Wandera Abu, Waniale Nathan, Mugobera Emma, Mafabi Ramadan, Nahabwe Innocent, Webyoya Ashiraf, Webisa Moris and Chagamu Seezi.
Kawala said two of the suspects, Waniale and Mugobera, were found in possession of three pangas and have been charged with being in possession of dangerous weapons.
The other 11 suspects have been charged with public nuisance as investigations continue to establish their alleged involvement in the robberies.
In a related development, Police carried out similar intelligence-led operations in Mukono Central, Namumira, Ngandu Village, Bajjo, Ntinda, Nyenje, Seeta, Goma, Kakiri and other identified crime hotspots.
The operations resulted in the arrest of 52 additional suspects, who are currently detained in Police custody awaiting appearance in court.
Police said the operations form part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal gangs and improve public safety across the Kampala Metropolitan area. Investigations into the cases are ongoing.
